Some dogs are natural-born heroes, and a big, fluffy pooch named Matyas is definitely one of them! This very good boy was playing with his dad’s granddaughter by the seashore in Gouville-sur-Mer, France, when a wave crashed over her. The little girl was sitting in the shallows, happily splashing among the breakers, and did not seem the slightest bit distressed by the momentary dip below the surface.

Matyas, on the other hand, reacted like a nervous parent. Seeing his playmate pulled under the water put him straight into protector mode. He decided swim-time was over, firmly took hold of the girl’s shirt, and dragged her back onto dry land!

It is unknown whether Matyas truly feared for his young friend’s life or was just joining in on the summer fun, but the little girl sure seemed to be having a good time! Her huge grin and peals of carefree laughter are infectious throughout the short video.

Matyas, who appears to be a Caucasian Shepherd, isn’t the only pooch who gets a bit protective when he sees a loved one go underwater. Each of the following dogs sprang to action to “rescue” their beloved humans from the dangerous waters of backyard swimming pools.

Check Out These 5 Self-Appointed Canine Lifeguards In Action!

1. Dog Saves “Drowning” Girl By Grabbing Her Ponytail

The young lady in this video dips under the pool’s surface and flails her arms as if she’s drowning. Luckily, her attentive German Shepherd is there to “save” her!

2. Faithful Dog Dives Into Murky Water When Owner Goes Under

The man in this video appears to be swimming in some kind of manmade swimming hole while his faithful dog lies nearby. He gets the pup’s attention, then lowers his head beneath the surface. Thinking his dad is in danger, the dog wastes no time, diving right on top of him and then dragging him out by his finger!

3. Small But Mighty JRT Splashes To Dad’s Rescue

While enjoying a backyard pool party, this dog dad decides to test his pup’s lifeguard skills. He goes under and splashes in mock distress. As partygoers cheer, his little Jack Russell Terrier takes a mighty leap into the pool and paddles to his rescue.

4. Loyal Doggo Dodges Obstacles To Get To His “Drowning” Dad

This video comes from Vietnam. In it, a man pretends to drown and calls out for his dog, who is nowhere near the pool. The pooch appears, maneuvering obstacles to get to his dad, then splashing right in without hesitation.

5. Pittie Who Has “Never Swam Before” Risks His Life For His Dad

In another pool party scene, we see a grey and white Pit Bull-type dog nervously wagging his tail and sniffing at his owner, who is pretending to be in distress. Finally, the pup runs around to an easier entry point and swims to his dad’s aid.

What do you think your dog would do in these situations? Are all dogs lifeguards just waiting for a water-logged victim to rescue, or are some braver than others?
