It’s easy to turn our backs to things happening on the other side of the world. Whether it’s a social, political or environmental injustice, when these things happen beyond our backyard, it can be tempting to look the other way. But it’s harder when we’re confronted by the realities, like in the video you’re about to see.

Actor Joaquin Phoenix speaks out in the video, produced by PETA, against the Chinese Dog Trade Industry, and encourages viewers to stop purchasing any leather products, since it’s impossible to know where the leather comes from. The disturbing footage shows stray dogs being imprisoned, beaten to death and skinned. The leather made from those dogs is sent to manufacturers all around the world, so any leather product you purchase, even if it is sold in the United States, may very well be the product of this horrific industry.

Be advised before watching that this video is graphic, but the message it’s sending is even more powerful, and is definitely worth taking the time to watch.

Has the footage changed your perception of leather? Share your reactions to the video below.
