Freshpet dog food recently announced its first recall. They issued a voluntary recall for a single lot of dog food due to potential salmonella contamination. All the affected food was “targeted for destruction” to make sure it never made it to consumers. Yet, despite catching it early on, the company accidentally sent the food to retailers.

Only one lot was affected, but dog parents should keep an eye out for the affected product in stores. After all, it’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your pup’s health.

Which Product was Recalled?

The only food included in this recall is the Freshpet Select Small Dog Bite-Size Beef & Egg Recipe Dog Food in 1-pound bags. Specifically, it’s only the food with a sell-by date of 10/30/2021, a UPC number of 627975012939, and a lot code of 1421FBP0101.

The company meant to get rid of the food, but instead, it got shipped out between June 7th and June 10th, 2021. It was sent to a few Publix stores in Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia, along with some Targets in California and Arizona. Most retailers pulled the products before they made it to the shelves.

How Can Salmonella Affect Your Dog?

Salmonella is a risk to both humans and animals. So, you should monitor your dog and yourself closely if you interacted with this food. Dogs infected with salmonella could experience lethargy, diarrhea, a decreased appetite, fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Animals can also carry salmonella without showing any symptoms.

Humans infected with salmonella could have nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare cases, it could lead to more severe conditions like arterial infections, arthritis, endocarditis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract infections.

Luckily, Freshpet has had no illness reports so far related to this recall.

What Should You Do with the Affected Product?

If you have any affected product, dispose of it immediately. Stop feeding it to your dog and wash anything that could’ve touched the food, including your hands, dog bowls, and containers. It’s also a good idea to wash your hands after every time you handle dog food. After disposing of the food, keep an eye on your pet for unusual symptoms.

Also, you can contact the company for a refund or questions at 1-866-789-3737. Call hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 9 pm (EST) and Sat through Sunday from 9 am to 1 pm (EST).
