When this pup’s mom didn’t stop at his favorite doggy daycare, he decided to take matters into his own…paws.
Dog mom Tonia Mosteller was driving through town with her 5-year-old Golden Retriever, Riley. They passed Happy Dog Cafe in Belmont, North Carolina, where Riley frequently goes to frolic with his friends. As they drove by, he knew that his daycare buddies were having the times of their lives–without him. Riley started to whine as he begged to join them, but he wasn’t scheduled for daycare that day, so they headed back home.
Once there, Mosteller dropped her dog off, leaving him outside on a beautiful day.
“I noticed Riley watching me carefully as I left, but I didn’t think too much about it,” Mosteller said in a story by KHOU news.
When the coast was clear, Riley decided that if Mom wasn’t going to take him to see his friends, he’d just take himself! So, he fearlessly took the mile-long journey on his own.
Happy Dog owner Teresa McCarter was baffled when she saw the patron pup, who had apparently stopped by unsupervised.
“I walked outside to see if Tonia was right behind him, and she wasn’t,” McCarter said in the KHOU news story. “He knows the way up here because they walk him all the time, so he just decided to put himself in daycare that day.”
The staff at Happy Dog called Mosteller to tell her that Riley was safely at the daycare, and they let him stay for the day, free of charge.
Since the pup’s “great escape,” the Mostellers have taken measures to make sure that their backyard fence is extra-secure, and keep a closer eye on their determined dog. Plus, they’ve made sure that Riley gets to spend more time at Happy Dog, his home away from home.
“It’s a true testimony to how much he loves Happy Dogs and the staff there,” said Mosteller in the story.
