This Method For Emptying High-Kill Shelters Is Saving Lives Across The U.S.

| August 14, 2017

It’s no secret that there is a pet population problem in the United States. The sad truth is that resources for homeless animals are limited, leading to euthanasia for millions of dogs and cats a year – at no fault of their own.

While some shelters overcrowd quickly due to overpopulation and lack of resources, others are mostly bare as they are located in areas that tend to have fewer strays and unplanned litters. What’s more, in some places, there’s no lack of families who are ready and waiting to bring a rescue pet home. Could it be that part of the solution is to redistribute pets from packed shelters to emptier ones where there’s more demand?

The answer seems glaringly simple, but the expense it takes to execute these transfer operations is immense. If there’s barely enough money to provide for the basic needs of homeless pets, how can overflowing shelters afford to purchase vans, planes, or even the fuel to get from point A to point B?

There are a handful of charities dedicated to these transport endeavors, and we wanted to help. So together with GreaterGood.org, the Second Chance Movement was launched.

To support this effort, the iHeartDogs store has begun to carry over a dozen products that benefit the Second Chance Movement. Each purchase helps fund the transportation of shelter animals from overcrowded, high-kill shelters to no-kill shelters and rescues with high demand for pets. One of the line’s signature emblems is a key, symbolizing how your support unlocks cages and a second chance for these animals – truly providing the key to a new life!

Another beautiful symbol used is a pair of wings, because transport flights can save well over a hundred lives in a single flight – and you funding them makes you their angel!

Rescuing hundreds of shelter pets from euthanasia may seem like a daunting task, but in fact, it’s quite easy to make a difference. Next time you need to buy a gift – for yourself or someone else – make a meaningful purchase from the Second Chance Movement line, and you’ll be doing your part to help rescue these innocent animals.
