Clarice, a 3-year-old Yorkshire Terrier mix, was let out for a potty break outside the Wisconsin apartment she lives in. It was just a routine moment for Clarice and her owner, Tom Deakin, until he noticed she was eating some hot dogs that were left on the ground. “I thought it was kind of odd..in the back of my mind, thought what if someone was trying to poison the dogs,” Deakin told NBC4. Unfortunately, his gut feeling was right. It turns out that the hot dogs placed around the apartment were stuffed with nails.
Clarice was soon rushed into an emergency surgery that lasted over 2 hours. Dr. Samantha Steinich, the veterinarian who performed the surgery, removed 6 nails from Clarice’s stomach and colon. “I’ve never seen anything with a malicious intent like this,” said Dr. Samantha Steinich. It’s a disgusting action – someone clearly placed the hot dogs around the apartment complex with the intention to harm the dogs that ate them.
Clarice has survived and is recovering, although she’s still restricted to a soft food diet. The apartment complex has issued a warning about food on the ground and to keep pets from eating anything they find. Police have yet to arrest anyone, but they have commented that they are looking to speak with a person of interest. We certainly hope that this person gets the punishment they deserve and that no more animals are harmed.
