Macy the Yorkie may be little — but she sure is fierce.

The little dog proved just that last week when she and her 10-year-old human sister, Lily Kwan, were out on a walk in their Ontario, Canada neighborhood and came face-to-face with a coyote. The coyote was chasing the pair down the sidewalk when Macy jumped into action, barking and lunging at the other canine.

Lily ran to a neighbor’s house screaming for help as the coyote grabbed Macy in his mouth. Eventually, a neighbor came outside and chased the coyote away.

Macy was injured in the attack — but she wasn’t about to let anything happen to Lily. The 6-year-old rescue pup sustained eight large puncture wounds that required surgery and a veterinary hospital stay.

The brave little dog is now at home recovering and is so glad to be back with her family. Dorothy Kwan, Lily and Macy’s mom, is just as thankful that the dog was there to help defend her young daughter. Dorothy was driving to work at the time of the attack.

After the incident, Dorothy set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of Macy’s veterinary bills. Over 1,100 people have donated toward her care — bringing in a whopping $34,000 to the fund.

“Macy is finally settling in at home,” Dorothy posted in an update on the GoFundMe page. “She is so excited to be reunited with our family again. We are grateful for all the love, support and words of encouragement received from family, friends and strangers throughout the city and even from the other side of the world. We are truly blessed that your thoughts and prayers are with Macy throughout her recovery journey. It will be a long one.”

People from all over the world — especially other Yorkie parents — have posted on the page to wish Macy well. Dorothy has kept the page updated with pictures of Macy resting at home.

“We have a similar little Yorkie mix and he is very protective,” one donor, Craig Sisson, posted. “We live in an area with coyotes and I have often mused that he would defend us if we encountered one, all 7 pounds of him. Little Macy’s courage shows me that our little guy likely will attack a coyote, and gives us the example to be very careful while walking him, especially at night. Hats off to Macy!”

While Macy has a long road to recovery ahead of her, she is getting a ton of love and snuggles from her family. Dorothy can’t thank the little pup enough for helping to keep Lily safe — and it’s clear that Macy would do it all over again to protect her sister.

“Macy is a handful, but I wouldn’t change a thing about her,” Dorothy said. “Her protective personality and spunk helped to keep her alive.”
