My 10 year old has developed allergies, I believe to grass. She gets terrible skin irritations where she scratches and bites herself till she bleeds and loses her hair. They usually flare up the end of July, into august and September. For the most part she is fine during the winter. I have changed her food to sweet potato and fish, and that has helped a little bit. The vet insists on seeing her each time I call to get the medication, or medicated shampoo that really helps to ease the itching. It’s getting very expensive paying for an office visit and medications every time this flares up. Anybody have any alternative suggestions?

I am having the same problem. I think my Rexy’s allergies are environmental, although I do know he doesn’t tolerate poultry well. He gets a “scab” that has a perimeter with hair loss in the middle. He gets them on the groin, the chest and occasionally on his back. The vet mentioned a specific med for allergic reactions manifesting in skin conditions, but it is expensive and compromises his liver. I am trying a science diet food on the vet’s recommendation, but he does not like it at all. Even to smell it, it is not appealing. I am going to bring that back. I am using a special shampoo and that works. I also give him Reactine when the itching really flares up. It only happens from spring to late fall, which suggests to me it is related to his rolling in the grass. Now, how do you stop that? I would appreciate any input, as well. I am going to try a new food this week, which I have been told works wonders for dogs with skin conditions and they like it. I will repost when I get the brand name.

I took my springer Ollie to a dermatology veternarian in the Dallas area to help with his terrible ear issues and he was found to be allergic to almost everything, grasses, weeds, the bacteria on his body. I have spent over $2.000 trying to get his ears and allergies under control. He’s been on allergy drops for about five, six months now and it’s barely under control. Does anyone have any natural methods that have worked for ear infections, allergies?

WE spent $$$ trying to figure out what was wrong with our dog. Skin problems started in the fall after letting him swim in the river…long story – short. After wasting money and dollars on skin treatments all winter (no ear infections so vet said it was not food) it turned out to be food intolerance. In February- on my own – I bought this test and found out he is intolerant to 9 foods, 4 of which I was feeding daily – ugh! We are one month on safe food (with a few slips – potato starch is everywhere, even in cheese! i read every label now) he is doing sooo much better No new skin eruptions. Check out this test and consider http://www.nutriscan.org. I could have wasted years trying to figure out all these foods he can’t tolerate. (his symptoms were bloody scabs all over his nose, neck and back)

Poor Ollie….Rexy isn’t too bad in the ear department. His outer ear, or pina, tends to be itchy so my vet suggested using over the counter hydrocortisone cream and it works. His can be a bit red and when he is working away at them, I will put it on before bed. Right now, he’s had another flare up (late summer where I am) and is on antibiotics. The vet was speaking about a “new” allergy med to try at the cost of $180 a month plus!!!! There are also risks to the kidneys and immune system. I was speaking to a compounding pharmacist and it’s amazing how much we get “fleeced” for animal meds. We are trying to help our dogs/cats/birds but those costs for a med that cost some 10cents a pill really rubs wrong…

My dog has the same problem . I ground up oatmeal in the blender wet her hair make an actual bath and rub her down with the oatmeaal. Also a big difference is when you stop giving them table food . Do not let them have table food at all . Then you need to keep the dog shaved and nails clipped . Any areas that are really irritated shave it down to nothing so it can get some air .on really bad days you can give the pup a pill of benadryl everyday for approximately 3 days . So far this is working for us . 9 years young Sadie . Iv added before and after photos
