I have always prided myself on my skill as a dog owner. That’s why, when my rescue went horribly wrong, it was one of the most stressful and heartbreaking times of my life. It goes right up there on the list with my grandpa dying of cancer, and finding myself unemployed when the economy crashed.

Over the years I have loved and trained a too-smart, bull-headed Australian Cattle Dog, a self-important Golden-Lab Cross, a bird-chasing, one-track-minded German Shorthair, a loyal, clueless, and anxiety-stricken Boxer, a dog-aggressive, terrified Alaskan Malamute, and a wild and quirky English Springer Spaniel. And by the end of their tenure, each could be said to be not just a good dog, but a great dog, despite their myriad of quirks.

So when my husband and I decided it was time to find a rescue dog to become second-dog, we were not wary of much. We started looking into dogs and decided to check out a local rescue which was featured in the Newspaper fairly often. The rescue (on top of a slew of other things from a lengthy application and home visit) knew the following things about us: we had a dog already, had a 4 year old nephew, and wanted a dog that was calmer than our Springer Spaniel.

We trusted the rescue to care about helping us find the right dog. We discovered and fell in love with Arkham, who we took home knowing he had hip problems. Within the first week, we had spent upwards of $700 on vet expenses, supplies, and adoption fees. But we really liked him and he was such a mellow sad soul, we were happy we could give him a home to be comfortable in.

Two and a half weeks later, Arkham bit a house guest during a relaxed book club event. He walked right up to her and when she kneeled down to pet him, it sounded like a dog fight. This was more than a warning snap. Thankfully, he merely nicked the skin next to her eye and bruised her side, but he was 90 pounds of scary. I was horrified, knowing he had earlier greeted all my guests at the door, including two little girls ages 5 and 7.

We kept him for two more weeks, during which he snapped at another friend, who was aware of the previous incident. The friend was talking to and petting our other dog, who jumped to our friend’s defense, and a dogfight ensued. Arkham still hadn’t met our nephew, who loves dogs, and struggles a bit with their boundaries.

After much debate, we determined that this was not going to work for us. In my original application I had said the one thing that could make me return a dog was a safety issue, and much to my surprise, I found myself facing just that. The idea of returning a dog, when I had previously dealt with one who had much more obvious and frequent issues, was very hard for me to swallow. But the reality was, I was no longer in my early twenties, and was now of an age when all my friends had kids, and I had a nephew to consider.

I broke out in hives from the stress of the idea of taking him back and after I took him back, the hives got worse and I sobbed my eyes out the first night. Writing this now, I am still tearing up. My husband didn’t know what to do. He had never seen me that distraught. He was willing to go back and get the dog right then and there, but I told him no, that wasn’t going to work. The rescue deemed him unfit for adoption and claims he is in a permanent foster situation. I don’t know whether to believe them or not.

What I do know was that when we began our search again, I paid close attention to how many dogs different rescues brought in, and whether or not they emphasized finding the right homes, versus finding any home. I did not want to bring home another dog that had not been thoroughly evaluated by the rescue.

Much to our surprise, we found a dog very quickly. Here’s what made us comfortable with the second adoption:
      1. They listened thoroughly to the list of our needs (versus caring more about our willingness to deal with the needs of the dog, like the hip displasia)
      2. They pointed us in the direction of a couple dogs, and told us which ones to steer clear of (versus just letting us select)
      3. They had a visitation room where we could pet, play with, and get to know the dog (versus petting him on a leash in a gravel driveway outside the kennels)
      4. They read to us their evaluation protocol and the specific responses the dog made (to things like having his paws touched, being poked, people approaching food, etc.)
      5. Shared with us what kinds of visitations the dog had had with potential adopters (including kids)
      6. The readily admitted what they didn’t know

Since we brought Harvey home, we could not be happier. He was a 5 month old puppy, when we had wanted a dog, but he was such a perfect fit that we were willing to deal with everything that came with a pup. From day one, things have been far less stressful than they ever were with Arkham. We breathe easy and don’t feel the need to walk around on eggshells. Although our dog and Arkham seemed to get along, things are decidedly more relaxed with Harvey and it feels fun to have two dogs, instead of stressful.

In hindsight, I will never adopt through a rescue that appears to rescue high volumes of dogs. Their hearts might be in the right place, but a good rescue wants to find a dog a forever home, which means finding the right home. That first rescue was not a good rescue, but the second was a great rescue. They cared about evaluating their dogs and matching them up with a good fit. I share this as a cautionary tale, for those like me, whose lifestyle just can’t accommodate a dog that is a risk. A part of me will always be heartbroken that I let down Arkham, but I am glad I made a choice that allowed me to give Harvey a great home instead.

You can see in the pictures below, Arkham, my 90 lb lap dog, who I only have one waking picture of where he was relaxed. And Harvey, on adoption day before we loaded him into the car, and then snuggling with his new best friend, Hero.

I had a dog I had to return because my large male (5 Years, neutered) Siamese decided to start stalking him. I had the dog for about 6 weeks before this started. The dog was a lovely Corgi/Pekingese mix, about 7 years old, I could not watch him all the time and I believe he seriously chased the cats, all of whom had been raised with dogs. I could not retrain him fast enough and was worried the cat would get an eye. I cried when I took him back, he looked so sad when I took him back to the Senor Dog Shelter. They did find another family fairly soon for the dog. Eventually I found another dog, might be a Mini-Pincher/Corgi mix about 8 months old. This dog jumps on the cat and wrestles with him. I think the difference was the first dog looked at the cats as PREY, and the new dog (11 months later) still looks at the cats as PLAY. It was for the dogs’ safety that I returned him, but I felt so bad because he was a sweet dog. Neither shelter had anyway to test for cat compatibility, I was just very lucky that the second dog had been raised with cats. Another reason for returning an animal.

Thank you so much for your post. My family has been on the verge of getting a dog for some time now but my husband is not on board just yet. I would really love to rescue when the time comes. I really didn’t know much about the process so your information has been an eye opener and again I say THANK YOU! I had no idea that you could “pick and choose” and take your time…I really thought that you went one day to a rescue place and picked a dog and went home with it. Duh! I’m so glad there’s so much more to it. Thank you also because I am a dog lover at heart and I too would be heartbroken to have a dog not work out and have to return it. UGH, what a nightmare that must have been for you. Again, I say, thank you for writing this post.
