I have had my dog Buddy, a cross long haired chewawa and yorkshire terrier since he was just a few days old, he is now almost 6 years old. He has been with me constantly, but when I go out, he starts to scream and bark as loud as he can, then he scream whines chokes? I have tried everything, looked through posts etc. He is not neutered and I wonder if this may have a calming on him, I have no intention to breed him. I have two other dogs, shitz zu and a very good temperament long haired lab, this has calmed him a bit, but still does the same thing even with the other dogs. It’s very frustrating as I can’t take him anywhere with me in the car as he screams so loud others look if I’m killing him. PLEASE, does anyone have any solutions that may work? Thanks

Sorry you didn’t get any answers on this. I have a similar problem with my Shih Tzu. I’ve had him for 4 years. We can never leave him alone. He barks all the time and gets his beard and chest soaking wet. He also coed damage to the door we left out of. Sometimes he pees and poops on our carpet. Other than that, he’s a good dog. He loves to go with us in the car. He loves people. We are at the point of giving him away because we can’t go anywhere! I know it’s separation anxiety but what can I do?
I probably won’t get an answer either. So sooty for your problem.

I don’t know if these actions are a reaction known to this breed or not. I would try putting him in a crate and then put towels or something to cover the crate so that the dog can’t see you. Then stay in the house. If the dog starts to whine, howl, etc. you can scold or verbally correct the dog. Open and close the door you go out but stay inside the house. When the dog whines, howls again correct the dog. Eventually the dog will not know when you are home or not. We also leave a radio on when we go out. If the dog shows a better reaction to your going out, make sure you reward him with a treat when you get home.

My toy poodle has terrible separation anxiety and is only attached to me. If you go outside of your house wait for a period of time until she calms a bit. When she isn’t barking go in and treat her. Keep this up as often as you can and she will improve. Also talk to your vet about medications used to treat this kind of anxiety in dogs…there are some that can help. Crate training is also helpful especially if there is any destructive habits or accidents. There is no one solution to this kind of problem….it will take a combined approach applied consistently and worked at regularly.

My dog was having panic attacks when I would leave her at home alone. My vet suggested using Rescue Remedy, it is an all natural product that helps keep her clam. You will find it in a health food store, or on Amazon. This works wonders for my dog.
