Hi there! I have a 3+ year old Springer. I go to one of the Banfield Vet’s in NY. I signed up for their insurance plan and upped the plan this year to include the dental cleaning. I am a bit torn on whether or not to do the cleaning as I’m worried about putting my dog under general anesthesia. Then again, I know that if I do not do it they could have serious gum issues in the future. I feel like this is a bit of a catch 22. Thoughts?

After years of desperately trying to pin down my Springer for long enough to clean his teeth, I gave up. My brother-in-law is a vet and he recommended that I ask the butcher for a cow ‘knuckle bone’ as apparently this is good for keeping teeth cleaned naturally, but my dog didn’t really bother with the bone. So, I asked the vet to clean his teeth (he was having an anaesthetic for another issue anyway). It was great, really successful and he returned with very clean teeth.
If you have tried the other ways, I would say – do it – I spent so many months stressing out about trying to clean his teeth….it was definitely worth it.
Now I just have to chase him round the house trying to clean his ears! (ah, the pleasures of having a Springer!)
