Entry excitement with my cane corso

I cannot quite give professional advice as a trainer, as I don’t have my certifications yet, but your dog is not unusual with his behaviour. My suggestions are to ultimately work in “small” steps offering the dog stimulation in an environment that is controlled by you and a handful of others he doesn’t know (sometimes 2-3 individuals works) where you continue to keep him on a lead (with a control collar if necessary) and get them to knock and ring the door bell unexpectedly. DO NOT let him get to the door first, use the lead to control him, and to correct him when he moves past you or does not ‘sit stay’. Each time he does this correctly reward him. Sometimes a video will help with this, and my suggestion would be to visit the Cesar Milan videos, or look through some of the great tutorials that are offered to help guide you.

ONE QUICK NOTE: Cane’s are hard dogs and very independent, and you will HAVE TO remain consistent, and USE POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT. Control collar’s can be abused, so only use it when you feel you have exhausted all ventures to correct the problem. Once you have decided to go there though with a Cane, especially one your age, you will find the behavior like night and day. These collars are for training ONLY and should ultimately be REMOVED when it’s time for bed, or when it’s “relax” time.

We taught our corso how to “go to his bed” when someone rings the door bell or knocks. We send him to his bed (or spot) whenever we leave the house and give a treat…works like a charm. We dont let him leave his bed/spot until we say “come”. We trained him while one of us rang the door bell and knocked to make sure he didnt release while hearing the noise of someone coming in and also do it throughout the day to make sure he sticks to it (a few times a week). This gives people space and he thinks its a game…he does whine while on his bed because hes excited to greet the incomers but i tell everyone who comes in to pay no mind to him until we “release” him.
