Hi I adopted a chihuahua a couple mo this ago and she only eats people food. I have tried soft dog food, hard little pieces, even putting some people food in with the dog food and she will just pick out the people food. What can I do to break her of this and get her to eat dog food because I know giving her just people food is not good. Please help I don’t know what else to do

Hi. It’s okay if you feed her people food as long as it is not high fat. Lean chicken, vegetables, sweet potatoes, stuff like that is fine for dogs.

You can try the tough love method. Just give her good dog food and if she doesn’t eat it then let her go hungry. She’ll have t to eat it or starve. I willing to bet after one day the dog food will look pretty good.

I’ve had my dog since 2 weeks old and it’s always been a struggle to feed him. I hear that other dogs gobble down whatever you put down but not my dog! I’ve spent thousands on different foods, vet care & bloodwork. He’s totally healthy they say. No one can figure it out. Blood work is perfect, fecal test neg, we did every test imaginable. He was only eating 1ce a week and not a lot at that. So I completely cut out all human food and stuck to all natural dog food. He eats about 2ce a week now and has a greenie every day. That’s all he eats.

Tough love worked. Not to be rude baby girl but your part of the problem. Ween him off human food. It’ll be terrible in the beginning but it’s worth it in the long run. Good luck! 😘😘

There are pet friendly recipes you can find online that people use to feed their dog. So salt or spices are added which are bad for your dog.

why? dog food is only real cooked out stuff that we eat that you can’t recognize with additives. i feed mine what we all eat. no dog food here. all doing well. pearly white teeth and don’t cringe when there is a dog food recall.

I haven’t read all of the posts yet, but the best way I got my dog to eat dog food was to sprinkle a little parmasean cheese on her food. When she was put in the kennel a few times, the owner laughed at my request. When we returned, she admitted to me that she had a few other dogs also boarding there that wouldn’t eat because they missed their owners. They Tried my parmasean idea on those dogs and it worked. Don’t buy the DOLLAR STORE brand, it has too much cellulose in it. I found the Kraft brand works best. You don’t need a lot.
Has anyone else tried this? My vet was thrilled with the idea.
Let me know if you try it and if it works for you. Good luck.

A poached egg on top, or a bit of cooked oatmeal. Always worked.

Human food is way better than dog food for our canine best friend furry family. Trust the nose of your dog. In the wild, if a (wolf for example) come to stumble upon a food it uses its nose (not sight) and they detect if the food is good or not. If dog refuses to eat it, it means it has smelled or detected something in there that is not good for his health. Do not force your dog to eat dog food.

In other parts of the world where people kill stray dogs by laying some food laced with poison, the poison could be too covered or concealed or the dogs are too hungry to detect.

All I can say is: trust your dog’s nose.

I had the same problem with my 3 Chihuahuas, they won’t eat dog food and i can’t blame them, have you ever seen what’s in that stuff? I have made them homemade food for 4 years now. There is plenty of recipes you can look up online. I give them a good variety..chicken, rice. ground turkey, ground beef..cooked and mashed up frozen green beans and cooked carrots, grounded egg shells for calcium and mashed up hard boiled eggs and sweet potato. then i divide and put in containers to freeze. I also give them a good supplement 3 times a week. I have very healthy and happy Chi’s and i never have a problem with them not eating and don’t have to worry about dog food recalls. It takes a little time and work but well worth it, i do this for 4 dogs every week.
