Riley was a rescue I adopted back in 2005. From the moment we met, he was my booboohead. Eventually, Riley became my service dog and then a therapy dog. We visited veterans in the VA hospital where I worked, and he brought so much love and compassion to veterans who were struggling with mental illness. He had a special gift with elderly veterans who had dementia- on several occasions, his presence lead to several veterans talking for the first time and in one special miracle, a veteran got up out of his wheelchair and walked with Riley. He never sat in the wheelchair again after that. Riley loved going to Disneyland and his favorite rides were It’s A Small World and the Jungle Cruise! I lost him so suddenly to a paralyzing ruptured disc in his long back in 2014. As I held him tight, he looked into my eyes and I could feel him begging me to let him have no more pain. He kept eye contact with me until the final moment. I knew he had gone to Heaven immediately because my phone suddenly rang. What is odd about the phone ringing, you may ask?? At the time, my ring tone was the Ave Maria. At the moment Riley’s eyes closed, my phone rang and the Ave Maria played. It was from a number I did not know, and it rang at the very moment he left me. THAT, my doggy friends, is a MIRACLE in my book! I still miss him everyday and feel emotional whenever I see another corgi. I have a picture I post whenever a friend loses their baby- Riley is at the top of the Rainbow Bridge waiting to greet his new friend who I have at the bottom of the Rainbow looking up at him in anticipation of meeting the crew! People can say what they want about animals and human qualities….I truly believe animals are just another species of human with all the emotions, feelings, and thoughts like anyone else.
For anyone who has lost a baby, know that Riley is waiting to meet them and show them around up there.
