Has anyone ever dealt with Luxating Patellas? My 9 month old yorkie was diagnosed with this last month. Basically, her knee caps are inside her legs and her bone from the knee cap down is bowed due to compensating for the knee caps. She is going to have to have surgery to correct the problem but they are waiting a few more weeks because her growth plates are not closed yet. Where the surgeon needs to cut the bone is right near the growth plate. I was just wondering if anyone else has dealt with anything like this.

My yorkie has that. She was diagnosed around 6 most. She is now 4and doing fine. I opted not to have the surgery, instead I give her hip n joint medicine everyday. Since then she no longer has the leg getting locked up and the vet said it looks like her knees formed a new area where it sits in. She runs , jumps and hasn’t had a problem since.

Hi.. my wee yorkie had this problem also. I opted for surgery as we where told he could not be on medication for long periods. He appeared to be in pain & somedays walked with a limp. He has had the surgery 3 months now and is finally back to hiself. It was a long journey and he had to be cage rested which wasnt good esp since he was never used to a cage. Alfie is 4. Coming 5 in november. Alfie had his bone broke to make a new space for his knee cap & 3 pins put it. It was a long tiring journey but my boy is back to normal now & doesnt appear to be in pain anymore after walks & chasing his ball.. i wish you and your pup the best of luck xx

I have her on joint medicine but I don’t think the that is going to work fully. I seen the xrays and her knee caps are definitely on the inside on both her legs.
Deborah – that is what they said my Giada is going to have pins in also. Right now she seems fine and not in any pain but she doesn’t jump like she used to and sometimes when she stands on her hind legs or is running they give out on her and she stumbles. We have to take her back to be re-evaluated at the end of November to see if her growth plates are closed.
I am very concerned about after the surgery and keeping her still. I know it’s going to be hard. -

My 1 year old yorkie is very active. She jumped off our bench and hurt her leg. The vet did x-rays and said she now has a luxating patella. It is only a stage 1. She recommended having the surgery done. She said it might only be to shave down the groove in her bone. I have heard from others that a stage 1 doesn’t always need surgery. That there is a possibility that since it was from being hurt a anti-inflammatory for a week or so she may not have another issue. I’m now wondering if I should get her the surgery or not. Any advice or info will be greatly appreciated
