My puppy is just over 4 months, and we realise we need to decide quite quickly whether to spay her or not. I’ve researched the pros and cons to both sides, and I’m just torn. I just need advice, which is best???

I would wait, I have a very active little girl that I could not keep quite. I had to sedate her after her wound ruptured from doing laps of the crate….. It took months for the wound to close and now that she is seven months old it still occasionally ruptures and she has a hernia. My vet advised me to put up with the ruptures and when she is older and reoperate….. PS. I use PAW PAW Ointment on the wound and it closes up within 3-5 days, great stuff.

Personally, I left my female Springer intact. I do not regret that decision and plan on keeping my next Springer intact as well. Other than dying from mammary cancer at 12 and a half years old, she suffered no harmful issues from being left intact. As long as you keep track of the dogs heat cycles and take necessary precautions during those times, it is really not that big of a deal. IMO, the risk that early spaying and neutering poses to a dogs development is not worth it.
