Sorry I do not have an online picture of Bella, I’m a non tech savvy grandma. Bella is age 9 and has lived with me for 2 years. She was formerly my daughters but my daughter moved from earth to heaven 7-17-13. Bella had this honking/hacking occasionally even back then. It does not happen all the time, not even every day. I have mentioned it to my Vet but he kind of shrugged it off. I’ve noticed she has done it several times in the last month. Sometimes goes long periods of not at all. Does anyone else deal with this and what to do?

Try testing for hook worms

My dog does this sometimes too. It’s nothing to worry about. It’s called reverse sneezing. Sometimes they do it when they are excited, come into contact with new smells, allergies, etc.

If you believe the sound is reverse sneezing, place your fingers over the dog’s nostrils for a moment and they’ll typically stop. If it’s a true coughing / hacking, that’s sometimes the beginning of a collapsed trachea. Liquid Albuterol is an excellent medication for that. You can also purchase an Attikat on the internet which works in conjunction with prescribed inhalers. The inhalers are much cheaper to buy through Canadian pharmacies on-line. The Aerokat is marketed for cats but it’s the right size for Yorkies. The Aerodog is too big for their little faces. Good luck with your fur baby and I’m so sorry about the loss of your daughter.
