Gizmo, my 5yr old maltese, has never gotten used to travelling in the car. Even on short trips, he will pant, whine and won’t sit unless he is sitting on the passenger seat in front where I can pat and reassure him constantly. Shortly, my husband & I plan to start a caravanning holiday, driving from Brisbane to Adelaide. I really don’t want to sedate him. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could settle him down?? Leaving him in a kennel isn’t an option! Thanks, Kerry Levey

Hope you haven’t already left on your caravanning holiday! You can buy Gizmo a “thunder shirt”. They are a very snuggly fit shirt for dogs that helps them calm down. Same idea when a person is having a panic attack and you give them a tight hug, helps calm and ground them.
The other thing you can do is take Gizmo for short car rides and build up. How I would start is walking him, put him in the car, give him a treat and take him out. That fast. Gradually build up the time he is in the car. Keep increasing the time until you can take him on short drives. Keeping mind to never letting him out until he is calm and relaxed. You can also feed him in the car so he learns that the car is great and all his food is in there. When he is anxious do your best not to pet him or talk to him. When you are doing that you are telling Gizmo that he is right, the car is scary and he should have a panic attack. Best of luck! Hope this helps!

I just experienced the panic attacks with my dog and the vet recommended the Thunder Shirt and Rescue Remedy. The Rescue Remedy is sold in health food stores. Ask for the one for animals, it is all natural and works wonderful. My dog is back to her old self, happy and playful. I never thought she could be so calm and relaxed. I highly recommend it for any dog that has panic attacks.
