What could be the cause of my Yorkie’s flea problem & greasy coat. She use to get tiny amounts (one bite) of people food, we used Frontline for fleas & flea shampoo. And Iams dog food.

We switched from Frontline to Nexgard and it seemed to work much better until August and we have been battling since then.

Now she eats only dog food which she really loves – Blue M——- for Small Breeds. She takes Nexgard for fleas (since May) We have recently switched to an Oatmeal & Aloe formula shampoo. She gets Pupperoni for her treats. Her coat also seems to Her coat also seems to be thinning. She constantly is scratching or chewing.

The last 3 years have been a battle. We have flea bombed the house, vacuum regularly, sprayed the furniture & carpet with Vetkem.

We also have a cat in the house and we treat her with Frontline and a flea collar. She has never been outside.

Are the fleas/scratching causing the greasy skin or is that a separate problem.

I had a similar problem with my Shorkie (Shih Tzu/Yorkie mix) when I switched to Blue Mountain food. Her coat began greasy, dull, eyes were weepy, etc. She also began scratching a lot (and I thought maybe it was a bad flea season). On a gut feeling, I switched her back to Eukanuba Small Bites for Small Breeds and all her problems went away. Coat began to improve almost immediately, scratching was much better after only a week and was gone after a couple of weeks. I was told by her Vet that she was not getting enough of the essential oils she needed and her coat was a true indication of that. It can’t hurt to try, maybe you will experience better results with your Yorkie’s coat with a different food. Good luck!
