After years of selfless service to their communities, two police dogs with the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) are ready for their next assignment—retirement.
MSP announced on Facebook that while retired police dogs typically go on to live with their handlers, some are made available for adoption due to specific circumstances. K-9s Klauss and Alex will soon be up for adoption, and their human employers are looking for the perfect families to take them home.
At five and a half years old, K-9 Klauss is dual trained in both patrol and human remains detection. He has served faithfully alongside his handler since the completion of his training, and this Malinois mix is ready to take on life’s next adventure. The decision was made to retire Klauss because his handler was recently promoted and had to leave the K-9 Unit. Klauss’ age means he will not start working with a new handler, and his former partner already has a retired MSP dog at home. Klauss is looking for a home where his new people will love him unconditionally and be willing to provide all the exercise and mental enrichment a dog with his abilities needs.

The second dog up for adoption from MSP is a German Shepherd named Alex. At eight years old, Alex has served as a police dog for most of his life. He is originally from Slovakia and is trained in both patrol and narcotics detection. Alex’s handler already has two dogs to take care of at home, and the department wants their faithful partner to find the perfect family. Eight years old is the normal retirement age for police dogs, but Alex still needs regular exercise to stay happy and healthy. He’s looking for someone to show him all the good aspects of retirement.

MSP is currently reviewing over 500 inquiries from people interested in adopting one of their soon-to-be retired police dogs. They have strict criteria for prospective owners, and each interested family is undergoing a vetting process. MSP is conducting interviews and running background checks to make sure Klauss and Alex go to the right adopters. They’ll choose families that seem to be the perfect match for each dog.
