In a heart-stopping incident in Colorado Springs, a brave dog named Rizzo has captured the hearts of many after heroically saving his owner, Carissa Welch, from a potentially lethal rattlesnake bite. The encounter occurred during a routine hiking trip when the unexpected danger slithered right into their path. What happened next is nothing short of miraculous.

This happened in a usual Monday morning walk when Carissa recalls the chilling moment when she heard the ominous rattle of the snake. Instinctively, she yanked Rizzo back, but it was a fraction too late. Rizzo, ever the protector, had already positioned himself between Carissa and the snake, taking the full force of the bite on his face and mouth.

“I wasn’t wearing my usual boots, just my trail running shoes,” Carissa shared, her voice heavy with emotion. “If Rizzo hadn’t been there, I feel like it would have been me.” The bond between Carissa and Rizzo goes deeper than simple companionship. Carissa said, Rizzo was there for her through significant mental health struggles.

Following the bite, Rizzo was rushed to the animal hospital where he spent a day and a half receiving life-saving antivenom treatments. Carissa pointed out the bald spots on his legs, remnants of the treatment, expressing that no cost was too high for her beloved pet’s life. “There’s no amount of money I wouldn’t pay to save his life again,” she affirmed, gratitude evident in her tone.

The financial strain of the treatments, amounting to about $3,000, has led to create a GoFundMe page to assist with the expenses. Carissa feels a mix of guilt and deep thankfulness. “I feel guilty, almost, because he had to go through all of that,” she admitted. Yet, through it all, the unbreakable bond between Carissa and Rizzo only seems to strengthen. “I’m definitely like grateful and blessed to have him,” she concludes.

Venom on Dogs

According to Ethos Veterinary Health when treating venomous snake bites in dogs, it’s crucial to act quickly to minimize venom spread. Keeping the dog calm and the bite site below the heart while seeking immediate veterinary attention is essential. Identifying the snake can help tailor the treatment, which may include antivenin—most effective within the first few hours—along with pain relief and intravenous fluids.

Continuous monitoring post-treatment is necessary as symptoms may progress, requiring hospitalization to manage complications. Prevention strategies include maintaining a clean yard, keeping dogs leashed, especially in snake-prone areas, and considering snake aversion training and vaccines. Immediate and correct treatment increases the likelihood of recovery.
