In late March, 66-year-old soap opera actor John Callahan passed away suddenly. The All My Children star suffered from a stroke in his own home, unrelated to the coronavirus. His ex-wife, Eva LaRue, and their daughter, Kaya, rushed to the hospital to see him. Because of the current hospital regulations, they were only able to stay for a short time before he passed. His death was so unexpected that it left LaRue and Kaya devastated. However, LaRue knew she there was something important she could do for her late ex-husband. So, she decided to adopt his beloved dog, Cali.
LaRue and Callahan were married from 1996 to 2004, but they remained close after that. After all, they had a daughter together, so they wanted to make sure Kaya had a great life. Kaya is now 18 years old, and she was very close to both of her parents throughout her life.
“He was my great friend, co-parent, and amazing father to Kaya,” LaRue wrote on Instagram. “The absence of his bigger than life, gregarious personality will leave a hole in our hearts forever. Words cannot express the shock and devastation we are feeling at this time.”
Welcome to the Family, Cali!
LaRue is a dog lover who has had plenty of furry family members before. However, she was not expecting to take in another at this time. Even so, she was more than happy to welcome Cali to the family. The sweet dog was like Callahan’s baby. LaRue knew he would’ve wanted to make sure Cali was in good hands.
On her Instagram page, LaRue shared a few pictures of her posing with the pup. Cali doesn’t seem interested in looking at the camera in any of the photos, but at least she seems happy to be with LaRue. It’s difficult to imagine what the poor dog is thinking right now. She probably misses her dad more than anything.
“Welcome to the family Cali! Wasn’t looking to add another thing that poops to the household, but she was John’s baby, and I know she’ll be just what God ordered to help us heal and vice versa,” LaRue wrote on Instagram. “Rest peacefully, John, I promise she’s in good hands.”
This will be a difficult time for LaRue, Kaya, and especially Cali. However, they are all lucky to have each other during these sad moments. LaRue might not have planned on adding a new member to her family right now, but she will definitely give Cali the life she deserves. Callahan would be proud that she stepped up to care for his beloved pup.
