Archer, the dog found tethered and up to her neck in floodwaters, has been adopted–by rescuer Sheriff Troy E. Nehls! We loved him for helping rescue this beautiful girl, and even more so when he promised to “visit” the dog’s former owners once they return. Now, he’s done something even more amazing by adopting Archer into his family!
“I am happy to say the only water this girl will be in now is the swimming pool in my backyard! We picked her up today from the Houston Humane Society. Welcome to the family!” Sheriff Nehls posted on Facebook.

This year, Texas has been pummeled by floodwaters. And unfortunately when some humans seek higher ground, they leave their pets behind to fend for themselves.
This week in Fort Bent County, a group consisting of volunteers Richard Allen and Jeff Shimek, Sheriff Troy E. Nehls, reporter Phil Archer and photographer Jeovany Luna ventured into the floods to help. They took an airboat around the area, searching for people who were stranded by the rapidly rising waters.
That’s when they came across an unsettling sight: A white and golden dog, tied to a rope as the floodwaters rose around her. Only her head was visible, and she could barely keep it above water. Thankfully, the crew reached her just in time.

Once safe in the boat, the exhausted pup seemed to immediately relax:
“This is infuriating. These residents will get a visit from me when they return,” wrote Sheriff Nehls on his Facebook page. (Three cheers for the sheriff!)
He also shared this photo of another precious life that they saved:
“Yet another dog found hanging on for dear life. Sickening,” he captioned the photo.
“On a return trip, Nehls, Allen and Shimek found five more dogs abandoned in the floodwaters and brought them out,” reported Archer in his Click2Houston news story.
Now with a new lease on life, the pup is being cared for by the Houston Humane Society. She’s been named Archer after rescuer and reporter Phil Archer, who shared her story. She got all cleaned up and is spending a few days relaxing.
“The Humane Society has received many inquiries about adopting her. Rest assured, she’ll have a NEW happy home,” the sheriff commented on Facebook.
Keep in mind that there are dozens of other animals who have been saved from the floods who need forever homes, waiting at area shelters.
A special thank you to the amazing heroes who saved this sweet girl’s life, and many others. Because of you, Archer has a second chance to find the loving forever home that she deserves.
