Elaine Cooper was shocked when she saw one of the puppies her Labrador Retriever, Milly, delivered. Milly is a chocolate Labrador and her puppies are all yellow – except for one. While most of us would expect the other pup to be black or chocolate, she was neither. Instead, she was green! “We’d never heard of it before and couldn’t believe our eyes,” Cooper told Insider Edition. “We thought it was a black labrador at first when it was in the sack. Then when she licked the placenta off, the puppy looked emerald green.”
Thankfully, the green coloring is nothing to be concerned over. The little pooch, named Fifi after Princess Fiona in the Shrek movies, received her emerald color from an overexposure to biliverdin. Biliverdin is a substance found in the placenta, but isn’t harmful to the puppy. In fact, she’s already started fading into a normal yellow coat color and her greenish tint will decrease as time goes on.
Not only is Fifi green, she’s the only female puppy in the litter and the smallest. Cooper says she’s bossing her big brothers around without any problem at all, though. Cooper says all of the puppies are doing very well and it appears that Milly is enjoying motherhood.
