There are many reasons a dog lover may not be able to have a pooch of their own, but now they can satisfy their canine cravings with a visit to the Camden County Animal Shelter in Blackwood, New Jersey.

The shelter introduced their new “Rent-a-Dog” program last week and it is already a rousing success!

Since its debut on the CCAS Facebook page, the program has attracted so many potential pup “renters,” the staff has requested more time to reply to them all!

Interested parties may “check out” a pooch for up to three hours and enjoy a hike, a stroll on the beach, or simply boost their endorphins with some canine cuddles.

“Many people would love to own a dog but for one reason or another are unable to. This is a great opportunity for you to enjoy the company of a dog and de-stress while giving them some much needed time out of the shelter,” said Freeholder Jonathan Young, liaison to the Camden County Animal Shelter.

The shelter says the goal is to give the dogs a break from the noise and stress as well as improve their mental and physical health. They hope the program and the publicity surrounding it will help deserving pups find their forever homes – and so far, it’s working!

A beautiful brindle gal named Cassandra was already adopted by one of her “renters”!

Interested applicants must be 18 or older with a valid driver’s license. Before heading out with their Rent-A-Dog, they must fill out a canine care questionnaire, sign a foster care agreement, and participate in a dog-handling session with the shelter staff.
