Comet, Cupid, Donner, And Blitzen Are Just 4 Of 9 Reindeer-Named Adoptable Puppies

| Published on December 11, 2019

Sorry if this article gets the song stuck in your head, but you’ve probably already been listening to it the past week or so anyway. This is a story about puppies and “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Yep, that famous inspirational tune about a ridiculed reindeer who rose to the top gave nine newborn puppies their names.

A miniature Daschund named Olive arrived at the RSPCA Halifax/Hudds/Bradford last month with her litter of three-week-old puppies. Staff believe they had been bred for sale as Christmas presents.

The puppies initially posed a financial problem for RSPCA Halifax/Hudds/Bradford. Staff provide round-the-clock care for the babies, which is costly. The creative and seasonally appropriate set of names turned things right around for them.

Manager Julie Cockroft shared a plea for help from the community.

“They need a lot of care and, also, a lot of specialist things so if any members of the public are able to help by making donations or dropping off any useful items then that would be hugely helpful. We’re particularly looking for puppy food and toys to keep them entertained.”

The puppies are still too little to be adopted, but they’re already extremely popular.

“We are currently taking applications for these adorable little pups and we’ve been absolutely inundated with responses – with more than 500 coming into us in less than 24 hours, some from as far afield as Thailand.”

The RSPCA hopes people will remain patient as they sort through all of the applications. They advise not to call, as that may prevent an emergency call from coming in.

Cockroft encourages anyone who got caught up in reindeer puppy-mania to consider adopting a different dog from the shelter.

“We’ve only got nine puppies and we’ve already got hundreds of families who are interested so we would love if people could look at some of the other dogs in our care who are also hoping to find their forever homes.”

For example, mama Olive herself is looking for a home too!

Seems like it’s a bit of a competition to adopt one of these cute reindeer-dog babies, but you can still donate cash and meals to the shelter here.

For those who have concerns over pushing puppy adoptions around Christmas, the RSPCA assures us the puppies will not be adopted until the new year. They wanted to begin the rehoming process as soon as possible.

The power of a creative puppy name is immense!
