“Well,” said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, “These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money.”
The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. “I’ve got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?”

“He couldn’t stop thinking about the Lab mix outside the building, so he went back to check on him. Sadly, the dog was gone. Sure enough, the next morning the dog was at the entrance again, and Schaffer saw him.”
Homeless animals have enough to contend with. Finding adequate shelter, food, and clean water is challenging enough. Doing so is dangerous for healthy strays but imagine what it would be like for a dog that is paralyzed! It would be impossible. Yet a dog, later named Kuya Bon, fought to stay alive despite his disability. He was left all by himself when his owner deemed him useless after a car had hit him.
Kuya Bon’s callous owner couldn’t be bothered with a dog that needed so much care. He kicked him out of the only home he had ever known. By the time he was spotted by a kind individual, he had been on the streets for a very long time. He had to deal with so many rainy days, especially during the monsoon season. It’s a miracle he survived this long.
A kind woman saw the dog from afar and got a bowl of food for Kuya Bon. She went over to him and put the bowl down. She wanted to see how bad his legs were. Despite his struggles, Kuya Bon slithered to the bowl of food and ate happily. The woman knew he needed urgent veterinary care. She would spend her own money to help him.
While waiting for Kuya Bon to have x-rays done, the woman called a local rescuer. She begged for his help knowing she couldn’t keep Kuya Bon and he did not belong back out on the streets. The rescuer agreed. Kuya Bon is recovering as we speak at the vet clinic. It’s uncertain where he will end up but what IS FOR SURE is that he will never be back out on the streets again! To see Kuya Bon’s rescue, please scroll down. We are so thankful that he is now safe.

A man enjoying his daily walk behind his house heard frantic cries for help. Investigating, he didn’t find anything or anyone around but was perplexed. The situation was not typical of the norm, so the man continued down the beach to see what was happening.
As the man continued to walk closer to the shore saw a tiny creature that was so vulnerable that his heart broke. This baby otter, who should have been with her family in the water, just sat in a pile of tears crying for her mother. The employee at the aquarium knew he had to try to unite the otter with her family.
He also knew how to handle the baby otter so he carefully picked her up and walked with her, up and down the beach, hoping to find her mom. He was encouraged that the baby otter’s cries would lure her mother out. But there was no other otter around. This was likely due to the large swells brought in by the weather. She was likely separated by her mom, for good. The man had no other choice but to bring the baby otter to the aquarium.
Happy endings are not always easy to find for special needs otters. As their stories show, the Monterey Bay Aquarium rescued a baby pup who was traumatized. Now, her fearlessness is empowering other young otters with the Shedd Aquarium helped facilitate her home there.
The day before this baby otter was transferred to Shedd Aquarium, she had the pleasure of being in care at Monterey Bay. The humans there knew it would be important for her to adapt to various otter activities, so the pup learned about solid foods and swimming in water below your belly.
The pup had become more and more playful and she even put up with being brushed and towel dried. Before long, it was time for her to make her journey over to Shedd Aquarium. She probably had no idea how much she would be missed. Some of her new human friends even cried as they said goodbye.
A baby otter has successfully made her way to her new home. Just wait until you see what happens next when she meets her new caregivers. Will you look at that face of hers.
